about

A super quick low quality home-made video here:

For Peter Reilly.

Written in Sevastopol, Crimea, a very good place to contemplate such things. This track started life as an experiment….. let’s say 95% or more of the lyric is mine, but in the verses I've inserted lines or adapted phrases from my favourite song-writers, as a tribute. So for example, one of my lines is 'imagining there was no heaven' which is very close to Lennon's "Imagine there's no heaven....". The main line of the chorus is a direct lift from Bob Marley's 'Redemption song' - I think what he says and the way he said it is perfect, no better way to say what I wanted to say. Maybe you can spot other lines from other favourite artists of mine?

lyrics

Freedom

So many choices
So many voices
Just an illusion?
Chaos and confusion?

Won't you listen to what the man say
Listen to what the man say

Well he said ‘let’s go’
And they followed him
But I couldn’t go so easily
A nagging voice inside my head
Rasta-rhyme inside my head

Emancipate yourself from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds

Won't you listen to what the man say
Listen to what the man say

Imagining there was no heaven
I considered the word freedom
What about this word freedom?
Maybe something worth believing?
Something to believe in?
Something to believe in?
Maybe something to believe in?
so I tried to get inside

Hiding there was democracy
Fucking the arse off religion
Up to their balls in hypocrisy
Sucking the dicks of righteous truth

All on the alters of honesty
Law and order beside them
Gorging on fear and judgement
Good and evil enshrined

A fat old man with stiff drink
and soft cock decides our fate

Our sons and daughters go blindly
Partners and lovers go blindly
Friends and family go blindly

Free to do just as they choose
Constrained in a gilded cage of morality

Bordered in
Safe within
Boundaries
Media-fed

smiling and laughing and looking so fine
Hey buddy can you spare a paradigm?

Don’t even think they know they where in this song
Don’t suppose they know where the song come from
Don’t even think they know where they belong
Don’t think they care if they belong

Won't you listen to what the man say
Listen to what the man say

‘Well let’s go to war’
And they followed him
But it didn’t go so easily
Answers were blowing in the wind
Shifty paradigm breeze

Rasta-rhyme inside my head
Emancipate yourself from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds

Won’t you help to sing
These songs of freedom
'Coz all I ever have
Redemption songs
These songs of freedom

Won't you listen to what the man say
Listen to what the man say
